Effect of defect-enhanced molecular oxygen adsorption on the imbalance of hole versus electron mobility in conjugated polymers

چکیده

The generally observed higher hole mobility relative to electron mobility in conjugated polymers is explained with the defects and adsorbed molecular oxygen. Adsorption of the extrinsic molecular oxygen leads to that electrons are bound more tightly than holes by the traps in the originally symmetric electronic system. Hence, the mobility imbalance emerges from the asymmetric binding energies. Besides, the defects are the favored adsorption sites because the intermolecular attraction is enhanced due to stronger induced dipoledipole interaction when gap defect levels appear.

Theory of imbalanced electron-hole transport in conjugated polymers

Electron-hole symmetry in conjugated polymers is found to exist in not only the band structure but also the defect levels caused by structure disorder. The commonly observed higher hole mobility is explained by (1) the compensation of the hole traps by the unintentional background p doping; and (2) the electron traps caused by oxidation. Higher electron mobility in N and O containing conjugated...

Band edge modulated conjugated polymers for oxidation prevention.

The impact of electron transfer (ET) from a series of band edge modulated polymers to atmospheric oxygen is examined in connection with substrate oxidation prevention. Polymers with the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level below and above the oxygen energy level were tested and the former showed better efficiency. Furthermore, the oxidation prevention efficiency of a polymer w...

Field-assisted ionization of molecular doping in conjugated polymers

The fieldand temperature dependence of the charge transport in solution-processed poly[2-methoxy-5-(20-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV) doped with tetrafluoro-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ) is investigated. Conventional charge transport models based on a densityand field-dependent mobility in combination with a constant background hole density from the dopant do not explain th...

Modified structure of two-dimensional polythiophene derivatives by incorporating electron-deficient units into terthiophene-vinylene conjugated side chains and the polymer backbone: synthesis, optoelectronic and self-assembly properties, and photovoltaic application

Molecular engineering on the conjugated side chains of two-dimensional (2D) conjugated polymers was conducted and its effect on the optical, electronic, self-assembly and photovoltaic properties was investigated. A new monomer, M2, was prepared by capping (E)-30-(2-(2,5-dibromothiophen-3-yl)vinyl)4,400-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-2,20:50,200-terthiophene, M1, with two heptanoyl groups, and then coupled w...

Use of side-chain for rational design of n-type diketopyrrolopyrrole-based conjugated polymers: what did we find out?

The primary role of substituted side chains in organic semiconductors is to increase their solubility in common organic solvents. In the recent past, many literature reports have suggested that the side chains play a critical role in molecular packing and strongly impact the charge transport properties of conjugated polymers. In this work, we have investigated the influence of side-chains on th...
